One of the first Ka-band broadband satellites for North American rural internet — a predecessor to today's high-throughput satellite internet. WildBlue-1 launched in 2007 providing satellite broadband to rural Americans who had no other option, proving that Ka-band satellite could deliver usable internet speeds to subscribers using small consumer dishes. Though modest by modern standards, WildBlue demonstrated the market demand that drove investment in the much more capable ViaSat and HughesNet satellites that followed.
