The backup and supplemental satellite for SiriusXM's satellite radio service — the system that provides uninterrupted music, news, and sports to 30+ million subscribers across North America. XM-5 ensures that SiriusXM subscribers never lose signal even when moving through areas where one primary satellite might be obscured. It carries the full SiriusXM channel lineup and can assume primary coverage duties if either of the main GEO satellites experiences technical problems.
